Empowered: Agent is the first book in Dale Ivan Smith’s The Empowered urban fantasy series. This series actually begins 5 years from when this story picks up. There is a novella called Renegade that features a 16-year old Mathilda (Mat) Brandt. 16-year old Mat lives in a world where you must make a choice if you have powers. You can either join the Hero Council, or go Rogue. There are no third choices. If you are caught and are not registered with Hero Council, you may very well end up in prison for the rest of your life. Mat, after being captured, was sent away to a special corrections facility for those with powers. As Empowered: Agent picks up, it is 5 years later. Now 21-year old Mathilda has been paroled from a special corrections and now has to find a job in order to support her family. In Renegade, readers got a chance to understand Mat's true powers. Powers she was just beginning to understand. In this story, Mat is now called a Botanical Catalyst because of her ability to control plants. Mat finds herself on the cusp of choosing which way her life is going to go after she is caught using her magic. She can remain clueless as to what is happening around her and end up back in prison, or she can take an undercover job with the Hero Council hunting down The Scourge, the most dangerous Rogues in the world.
With two sisters on the edge of getting themselves into deep trouble, and her grandmother slowly dying from a rare disease, Mat finds herself choosing between working undercover for Support in order to infiltrate a group known as the Scourge, or quickly returning to prison where she will no longer have access to her powers. What really sets this story straight with me is Mat's powers really grow by leaps and bounds from Renegade. Also, her situation with her family is no joke. There isn't anything that is pure black, or pure white. It is a mixed up world where Mat has to make the best choices without screwing up.
One could call this an alt-reality story since the author makes pains to twist history especially when it comes to Tricky Dick Nixon and the Cuba missile crisis. If you like heroes and villains, you’ll love this fast-paced, suspenseful read featuring a strong female hero.

Renegade The Empowered Series Book 0 edition by Dale Ivan Smith Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Started the usual teenage angst trying to find themselves then grew into an interesting plot. Illread one more before deciding to continue
This prequel story fleshed out the tale of Mathilda, and was a load of fun to read. Mr Smith has done an amazin gjob of writing yet again.
Excellent prequel to a very good series. Short but satisfying with action and introducing several characters that will appear in later books in greater roles.
This is an interesting premise with real potential. Having just read Empowered Agent l think this volume needs a bit of editing and polish to bring it up to par. I know the main character is a teen but... Anyway, it's worth a shot if only to make it to the the next book.
Very interesting take on an alternate history, super powered culture! I could definitely see the US government taking the stance that this government took on superpowered people, and it is a little more realistic when compared to old-school comic books. That being said, I would've liked a little more background on when powers started, maybe a little more into how they work, but otherwise I really liked the book and it sets up the first book in the series well!
This novella tells the story Mathilda's discovering her abilities as a "Botanical Catalyst" and her time among the group of rogue Empowered and normal people who became known as the Renegades.
Reading this prequel before starting the Empowered Series isn't necessary, but it would provide extra background knowledge which makes reading the series a richer experience.
If you like super hero comics and novels this is story worth a few hours of your time to read.
This was a fun introduction into the Empowered series. I decided to read this one before I started on book 1 and I am glad I did as the events in this book feel like they will be an important part of Mathilda's story. It's a decent length and doesn't feel too rushed, although some things do happen a bit quickly.
I liked how we got introduced to Mathilda in this book and got a bit of a feel for this world, the powers and even a tad of politics. There are still things that aren't entirely clear, but I figure that will be clarified in book 1. This book mostly focused on when Mat grows into her powers and gets discovered by a group that calls themselves Renegade's.
If you have read the blurb of book 1 you know how this novella will likely read. And while situations like that can lead to very bittersweet novella's that wasn't the case here. Even knowing what was going to happen, I didn't fully feel the tension or suspense. I guess that's my main complaint about this novella that I never felt fully engaged in it and didn't feel the emotions. That's okay though as I still really enjoyed this novella and how it was a nice piece of background information about Mat. I also would've liked to get to know Mathilda a bit better, but I am sure that will happen in book 1.
I do like the writing of this author so far. The writing flows nicely and the pace is well done, with enough details to get a feel for things, but not too much to bog things down. Some things do happen a bit quickly, but I think that's more due to this being a novella than the writing. I did think some of the dialogue felt a tad off at first, but that improved as the story progressed.
The concept of this series is what got my attention in the first place and the beautiful covers. I don't read many superhero stories, but this one just sounded so fun and I like that Mathilda's power involves plants. Which is also one of my favorite parts of this one. I liked reading about her powers and there were quite some scenes she had to use them, so we got a bit of a feel for what she could do and how it worked. I liked the descriptions of her powers and how she felt the plants.
To summarize This novella was a fun read and makes me curious about the rest of the series. It was a fun read that gives the reader a feel for Mathilda and this world. I think the events here will be an important part of Mathilda's story. The writing was well done and I liked reading about Mathilda's powers. I did think there could've been a bit more emotion as I didn't really feel the tension or suspense. And at the start there was some dialogue that seemed a bit off, but that improved when the story progressed. All in all this novella gave a nice piece of background information and made me looking forward to start book 1.
